Mesquite Chair Project

I received a commission to build a chair based on one the customer bought from a catalog.
This page details the entire process from design to completion.

This is a picture of the chair that the one I am building is based on. It was ordered from a catalog and is made of Mahogany.

Another shot of the original chair.
I am preparing to measure it so I can create my full size drawings.

This is a shot of measuring the chair for full size drawings

One of many full size drawings

I created templates from the drawings to be used to make the parts.

The slats for the back were a double taper challenge.

These are the front and back leg templates.
I had to create templates for all the parts of the chair but
won't post pics of them individually

Here's the partially completed prototype.

This is a pair of the three partially completed chairs.

This is a shot of the leg stringers. Making these and doing the joinery for them was the most challenging part of this project.

Here's shot of the clamping process.

Here's a better pic of the back of the chair.

This is a shot of the finished chair. Notice the round disk at the center of the leg stringers.
I turned these on the lathe then cut them to cover the joint.

This finished chair won 3rd place in the AAFW woodworking show master furniture catagory.
The finish is danish oil.
